Applying for Online Studies Courses

To register for Online Studies courses, students must complete and submit an online application for admission.  Students may apply to Online Studies programs either as degree-seeking or as advanced special students.  Advanced special student status is ideal for individuals whose primary objective is to take graduate-level courses, but who are not on a degree-seeking path.

Registering for Online Studies Courses

Students may register for Online Studies courses once they have received an official notification of admission to the program. Students can register up to 30 days prior to the beginning of a course by visiting the Online Studies home page at www.onlinestudies.umd.edu, selecting the appropriate course from the scrolling bar, then clicking on the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) icon.  From this site, students may select the “Register” link to proceed with registration.

A student identification number (SID) and personal identification number (PIN) are required to access the registration site.  In most cases, a student’s SID is automatically set to their Social Security Number.  Students who do not have a Social Security Number assigned to them will be issued a University of Maryland SID.  The personal identification number (PIN) is initially set to the student’s six-digit birth date in a month/date/year format (MMDDYY).  For example, a birth date of December 9, 1965, will result in a PIN set to 120965.  To proceed, simply click on either “WAM/OWL” (when accessing the system from a public terminal) or on “Non-Public access.”

Once they system has been accessed, a list of program courses offered for the coming semester will appear. To register, students simply click on the circle to the left of the course for which they would like to register, enter a current e-mail address at the end of the page and click on “confirm registration.”  Usually within 24 business hours, students will receive an e-mail confirmation of course registration as well as further information about accessing the course.

The following screen gives students the option to go directly into the “Net Pay” system to pay bills via credit card or by debiting their checking accounts.

Late Registration

Students can register up to 30 days prior the first day of a course. Students should register BEFORE the first day of a course. Students who wish to register on or after the first day of the course must obtain permission from the instructor.  A $20 late registration fee will be assessed to registrations initiated on or after the first day of the course.  Please note: Late registrants are responsible for payment of tuition and fees at the time of registration.

Cancellation of Registration

Students who register for courses but later decide not to participate, must cancel their registration prior to the first day of class. Notification of cancellation may be made via e-mail to onlinestudies@umd.edu . This request should include the student’s full name, social security number or SID and the course(s) to be cancelled.  Failure to cancel registration prior to the first day of class will result in a financial obligation to the university, regardless of student participation in courses.

Withdrawal from Online Studies Courses

To withdraw from an Online Studies course on or after the first day of the course, students must make a formal request by e-mailing onlinestudies@umd.edu .  Withdrawals are made effective the date the request is received.  Students may withdraw from a course at any time during the term without academic penalty; however, withdrawals are recorded on final transcripts.

Academic service fees are nonrefundable when a student withdraws from a course.  Tuition refunds are granted based on the refund schedule below:

  • There is a 100% refund for classes canceled prior to the first day of
    the course.
  • There is a 70% refund for withdrawals processed within the first week (seven calendar days) from the first day of the course.
  • There is a 50% refund for withdrawals processed within the first two weeks (14 calendar days) from the first day of the course.
  • There is a 20% tuition refund for withdrawals processed within the first three weeks (21 calendar days) from the first day of the course.
  • There is no refund granted for withdrawals processed after the first three weeks (22 calendar days or more) from the first day of the course.

Tuition Refund Policy

The University of Maryland will not automatically refund a credit balance.  However, students may request a refund by e-mailing
onlinestudies@umd.edu
, or by contacting the Office of the Bursar at 1-888-313-2404 or billtalk@accmail.umd.edu.  Tuition refunds are based on the date of withdrawal or cancellation as described above.

Credit card payments are refunded by crediting the original credit card account.  Refund requests are usually completed within two to three weeks from the date of receipt of the request. Payments made by check are refunded with a check made payable to the student within three to four weeks.

Online Studies Courses Canceled by the University of Maryland

The University of Maryland reserves the right to cancel courses due to insufficient enrollment or other valid administrative reasons.  Once a course has been canceled, students enrolled in that class are entitled to a full refund of tuition and fees associated with that course.  Cancellation of a course may occur close to the first day of class; however, the university makes every effort to inform students of such changes so that there is an opportunity to make alternate course selections or arrangements.

Tuition and Fees

The tuition and fees for Online Studies programs vary.  In order to determine the tuition and fees for a particular program, students may visit the Online Studies home page on www.onlinestudies.umd.edu and click on the link to their program.  From the program’s site, tuition and fee amounts are listed at a link entitled “tuition and fees.”

Bill Payment

The University of Maryland offers students two ways in which to pay their bill. Payment can be made online with a credit card or by debiting a checking account at the time of course registration.  To process a payment after the time of registration, please visit http://www.onlinestudies.umd.edu/spoc.html and click on “Pay Your Bills.”  The university accepts VISA, MasterCard and Discover.  Payment can also be made by check or money order payable to the University of Maryland and mailed to the Office of the Bursar, Lee Building, College Park, Md. 20742.
